1. Introduction
In this codelab, you will build a smart conference session search and recommendation system using AlloyDB for PostgreSQL and its AI capabilities. You will explore how to combine traditional keyword search with advanced semantic vector search, use QueryData to generate predictable SQL statements from natural language, and utilize intelligent operator functions.
What you'll do
- Deploy an AlloyDB cluster and enable AI capabilities.
- Load a Conference Dataset and understand its structure.
- Enable AlloyDB Data access API
- Use AlloyDB AI Operators like
ai.ifandai.rankfor semantic actions. - Implement Hybrid Search combining semantic vector (ScaNN) and text (RUM) searches.
- Enable QueryData for AlloyDB
- Generate QueryData templates
- Use QueryData with AI Agents
What you'll need
- A web browser such as Chrome
- A Google Cloud project with billing enabled
This codelab is for developers of all levels, including beginners.
Estimated total duration: 60-70 minutes. Estimated cost: Under $3 USD (resources created in this codelab are eligible for standard free tier or trial usage).
2. Setup and Requirements
Project Setup
Sign-in to the Google Cloud Console. If you don't already have a Gmail or Google Workspace account, you must create one.
Use a personal account instead of a work or school account.
Create a Google Cloud Project
- In the Google Cloud Console, on the project selector page, select or create a Google Cloud project.
- Make sure that billing is enabled for your Cloud project. Learn how to check if billing is enabled on a project.
Start Cloud Shell
While Google Cloud can be operated remotely from your laptop, in this codelab you will be using Google Cloud Shell, a command line environment running in the Cloud.
- Click Activate Cloud Shell at the top of the Google Cloud console.
- Verify authentication:
gcloud auth list
- Confirm your project:
gcloud config get project
- Set it if needed:
export PROJECT_ID=<YOUR_PROJECT_ID>
gcloud config set project $PROJECT_ID
3. Before you begin
Enable APIs
Run this command to enable all the required APIs:
gcloud services enable alloydb.googleapis.com \
compute.googleapis.com \
cloudresourcemanager.googleapis.com \
servicenetworking.googleapis.com \
aiplatform.googleapis.com \
geminidataanalytics.googleapis.com
Introducing the APIs
- AlloyDB API (
alloydb.googleapis.com) allows you to create, manage, and scale AlloyDB for PostgreSQL clusters. It provides a fully managed, PostgreSQL-compatible database service designed for demanding enterprise transactional and analytical workloads. - Compute Engine API (
compute.googleapis.com) allows you to create and manage virtual machines (VMs), persistent disks, and network settings. It provides the core Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) foundation required to run your workloads and host the underlying infrastructure for many managed services. - Cloud Resource Manager API (
cloudresourcemanager.googleapis.com) allows you to programmatically manage the metadata and configuration of your Google Cloud project. It enables you to organize resources, handle Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies, and validate permissions across the project hierarchy. - Service Networking API (
servicenetworking.googleapis.com) allows you to automate the setup of private connectivity between your Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) network and Google's managed services. It is specifically required to establish private IP access for services like AlloyDB so they can communicate securely with your other resources. - Vertex AI API (
aiplatform.googleapis.com) enables your applications to build, deploy, and scale machine learning models. It provides the unified interface for all of Google Cloud's AI services, including access to Generative AI models (like Gemini) and custom model training. - Data Analytics API (
geminidataanalytics.googleapis.com) allows your application to use general AI capabilities in BI products.
4. Provision AlloyDB
Create an AlloyDB cluster and primary instance.
Create Private IP Range
AlloyDB requires a private IP range in your VPC. Assuming you are using the default VPC network:
- Create the private IP range:
gcloud compute addresses create psa-range \
--global \
--purpose=VPC_PEERING \
--prefix-length=24 \
--description="VPC private service access" \
--network=default
- Establish private connection:
gcloud services vpc-peerings connect \
--service=servicenetworking.googleapis.com \
--ranges=psa-range \
--network=default
Create AlloyDB cluster
- Create a password for the
postgresuser:
export PGPASSWORD=`openssl rand -hex 12`
echo $PGPASSWORD
- Create a Free Trial Cluster ("TRIAL"), or a standard cluster ("STANDARD") if not your first time:
export REGION=us-central1
export ADBCLUSTER=alloydb-next26-ai-demo-01
gcloud alloydb clusters create $ADBCLUSTER \
--password=$PGPASSWORD \
--network=default \
--region=$REGION \
--subscription-type=TRIAL
- Create the Primary Instance:
gcloud alloydb instances create $ADBCLUSTER-pr \
--instance-type=PRIMARY \
--cpu-count=8 \
--region=$REGION \
--cluster=$ADBCLUSTER
5. Setup database permissions
Enable Vertex AI Permissions for Embedding Generation
PROJECT_ID=$(gcloud config get-value project)
gcloud projects add-iam-policy-binding $PROJECT_ID \
--member="serviceAccount:service-$(gcloud projects describe $PROJECT_ID --format="value(projectNumber)")@gcp-sa-alloydb.iam.gserviceaccount.com" \
--role="roles/aiplatform.user"
Enable Data Access API
You need to enable the Data Access API on the AlloyDB cluster to be able to use QueryData contexts for creating templates to help create predictable SQL statements from natural language.
In the same terminal tab execute:
PROJECT_ID=$(gcloud config get-value project)
REGION=us-central1
ADBCLUSTER=alloydb-next26-ai-demo-01
curl -X PATCH \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $(gcloud auth print-access-token)" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
https://alloydb.googleapis.com/v1alpha/projects/$PROJECT_ID/locations/$REGION/clusters/$ADBCLUSTER/instances/$ADBCLUSTER-pr?updateMask=dataApiAccess \
-d '{
"dataApiAccess": "ENABLED",
}'
Enable IAM Authentication
For our agentic tools, you must enable IAM authentication on the instance and then add yourself as a user.
Enable IAM on the instance by executing the following in the same terminal tab:
PROJECT_ID=$(gcloud config get-value project)
REGION=us-central1
ADBCLUSTER=alloydb-next26-ai-demo-01
gcloud beta alloydb instances update $ADBCLUSTER-pr \
--database-flags alloydb.iam_authentication=on \
--region=$REGION \
--cluster=$ADBCLUSTER \
--project=$PROJECT_ID \
--update-mode=FORCE_APPLY
Add yourself as an AlloyDB user:
REGION=us-central1
ADBCLUSTER=alloydb-next26-ai-demo-01
gcloud alloydb users create $(gcloud config get-value account) \
--cluster=$ADBCLUSTER \
--region=$REGION \
--type=IAM_BASED \
--db-roles=alloydbsuperuser
6. Prepare the sample database

You should see output indicating successful execution. Verify tables are populated. For example, verify you have 100 sessions in the sessions table:
SELECT count(*) from public.session;
7. Enable AI Query Engine
Before using AI functions, you must enable the AI query engine in your database.
Run the following SQL in AlloyDB Studio (conference_db context):
CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS google_ml_integration CASCADE;
ALTER DATABASE conference_db SET google_ml_integration.enable_ai_query_engine = 'on';
Verify that the extension is enabled:
SELECT extversion FROM pg_extension WHERE extname = 'google_ml_integration';
Expected output should show 1.5.9 or higher.
8. Use AI Functions (Operators)
Now let's use AI-driven semantic filtering and scoring with the ai.if and ai.rank functions.
Semantic Filtering with ai.if
Standard text matching might miss sessions if the exact keyword isn't present. Let's find sessions about "Generative AI" using ai.if.
Run the following SQL in AlloyDB Studio:
SELECT session_name, full_description
FROM public.session
WHERE
ai.if(
prompt => 'Is this session description about Generative AI, LLMs or AI agents? ' || full_description
);
You should see relevant sessions in the results even if they use different terminology.
Semantic Scoring with ai.rank
Let's score sessions based on how beginner-friendly they are. We can use ai.rank for semantic scoring.
Run the following SQL:
SELECT session_name, full_description,
ai.rank(
prompt => 'On a scale of 0 to 1, how suitable is this session for a beginner? 1 being very suitable, 0 being advanced. Session: ' || full_description
) as beginner_friendly_score
FROM public.session
ORDER BY beginner_friendly_score DESC;
This is useful for creating personalized recommendations for conference attendees based on their profile.
9. Implement Hybrid Search
Hybrid search combines the precision of keyword search (lexical) with the contextual understanding of vector search (semantic). We will create indexes for both and use Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) to merge the results.
Enable scann
Ensure the scann and rum extensions are enabled:
CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS alloydb_scann;
CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS rum;
Create Indexes
Since our schema uses a generated column for embeddings (full_description_embedding), they are automatically calculated upon insertion. We just need to create the proper indexes for fast retrieval.
Create a RUM index (FTS index) for full-text keyword search and a ScaNN index for fast vector similarity search.
Run the following SQL in AlloyDB Studio:
-- Create RUM index for text search on session descriptions
CREATE INDEX session_text_idx ON public.session USING RUM (description_tsvector rum_tsvector_ops);
-- Create ScaNN index for vector search on session embeddings
CREATE INDEX session_vector_idx ON public.session
USING scann (full_description_embedding cosine)
WITH (num_leaves=10);
Run Hybrid Search with RRF
Now, we want to look for session on fast similarity search, but focusing on AlloyDB's ScaNN.
We will use semantic search and keyword search, and merge the results using RRF.
Run the following SQL:
-- Enable preview features for the AI Query Engine if not already set
SET google_ml_integration.enable_preview_ai_functions = true;
SELECT s.session_id, s.session_name, s.full_description
FROM public.session s
JOIN ai.hybrid_search(
search_inputs => ARRAY[
'{
"data_type": "vector",
"table_name": "session",
"key_column": "session_id",
"vec_column": "full_description_embedding",
"distance_operator": "public.<=>",
"limit": 5,
"query_vector": "ai.embedding(''text-embedding-005'', ''fast similarity search'')::vector"
}'::JSONB,
'{
"data_type": "text",
"table_name": "session",
"key_column": "session_id",
"text_column": "description_tsvector",
"limit": 5,
"ranking_function": "<=>",
"query_text_input": "ScaNN"
}'::JSONB
]
) AS search_results
on s.session_id = search_results.id;
You should see relevant sessions similarity search with most results showing ScaNN related sessions.
10. Work with QueryData in AlloyDB Studio
AlloyDB AI lets you use QueryData to generate accurate and predictable SQL statements from natural language input. In this section, you will learn how to create a QueryData context (templates) and test it directly in AlloyDB Studio.
Create QueryData Context
The QueryData Context is a JSON file with query templates and facets which provide necessary data and directions to the AI model to use correct SQL queries or SQL query parts.
Let's look at a sample JSON context designed for our conference schema. Note that we ensure the table names match our schema (e.g., public.session).
Here is the JSON content we will use - Store it in a local .json file on your laptop/computer :
{
"templates": [
{
"nlQuery": "Advanced sessions that are almost full",
"sql": "SELECT session_name, remaining_capacity, session_date, session_start_time FROM session WHERE learning_level = 'Advanced' AND remaining_capacity > 0 AND remaining_capacity < 5 ORDER BY remaining_capacity ASC",
"intent": "Advanced sessions that are almost full (remaining capacity less than 5)",
"manifest": "Advanced sessions that are almost full (remaining capacity less than 5)",
"parameterized": {
"parameterized_intent": "$1 sessions that are almost full (remaining capacity less than 5)",
"parameterized_sql": "SELECT session_name, remaining_capacity, session_date, session_start_time FROM public.session WHERE learning_level = $1 AND remaining_capacity > 0 AND remaining_capacity < 5 ORDER BY remaining_capacity ASC"
}
},
{
"nlQuery": "Find sessions about Gemini",
"sql": "SELECT name, format, session_date, description FROM ((SELECT s1.session_name AS name, s1.session_format AS format, s1.session_date AS session_date, s1.full_description AS description, (s1.full_description_embedding <=> public.embedding('text-embedding-005', 'Gemini')::public.vector) AS distance FROM public.session s1 ORDER BY distance LIMIT 10) UNION ALL (SELECT s2.session_name AS name, s2.session_format AS format, s2.session_date AS session_date, t.topic_desc AS description, (t.embedding <=> public.embedding('text-embedding-005', 'Gemini')::public.vector) AS distance FROM public.session s2 INNER JOIN public.session_topic_mapping stm ON s2.session_id = stm.session_id INNER JOIN public.session_topic t ON stm.topic = t.topic ORDER BY distance LIMIT 10)) AS combined_results ORDER BY distance LIMIT 10",
"intent": "Find sessions about Gemini",
"manifest": "Find sessions about a given topic",
"parameterized": {
"parameterized_intent": "Find sessions about $1",
"parameterized_sql": "SELECT name, format, session_date, description FROM ((SELECT s1.session_name AS name, s1.session_format AS format, s1.session_date AS session_date, s1.full_description AS description, (s1.full_description_embedding <=> public.embedding('text-embedding-005', '$1')::public.vector) AS distance FROM public.session s1 ORDER BY distance LIMIT 10) UNION ALL (SELECT s2.session_name AS name, s2.session_format AS format, s2.session_date AS session_date, t.topic_desc AS description, (t.embedding <=> public.embedding('text-embedding-005', '$1')::public.vector) AS distance FROM public.session s2 INNER JOIN public.session_topic_mapping stm ON s2.session_id = stm.session_id INNER JOIN public.session_topic t ON stm.topic = t.topic ORDER BY distance LIMIT 10)) AS combined_results ORDER BY distance LIMIT 10"
}
}
]
}
Load QueryData Context in AlloyDB Studio
To use our Query Data context, we need to upload it to our database via AlloyDB Studio.
- Open AlloyDB Studio in the Google Cloud Console.
- In the left panel at the bottom, you will see Context sets and three dots.
- Click on it and choose Create context set.
- Fill in the dialog:
- Name:
conference_context - Description:
Conference Sessions QueryData Context - Upload context file: Upload the JSON file created with the content above.
- Name:
- Save it
Test QueryData Context
Once uploaded, you can test it directly in AlloyDB Studio.
- Click on three dots next to the context you just created and choose Test context set (or use the Gemini pill in the query editor and select this context).
- In the Gemini SQL generation prompt, type a natural language query that matches our template:
Advanced sessions that are almost full - Generate the SQL and verify it matches the template we provided.
- Try a parameterized query by changing "Advanced" to "Beginner" in your natural language prompt and see if it adapts!
11. Clean up
Delete AlloyDB cluster
To avoid ongoing charges to your Google Cloud account, delete the resources created during this codelab.
Run the following commands in Cloud Shell to delete the AlloyDB cluster (this will also delete the instance):
export REGION=us-central1
export ADBCLUSTER=alloydb-next26-ai-demo-01
echo "=> Deleting AlloyDB Cluster (${ADBCLUSTER})..."
gcloud alloydb clusters delete $ADBCLUSTER --region=$REGION --force
Alternatively, if you created a project specifically for this codelab, you can delete the entire project.
Delete IP range and vpc-peering
PROJECT_ID=$(gcloud config get-value project)
echo "=> Deleting Service Networking VPC Peering..."
gcloud compute networks peerings delete servicenetworking-googleapis-com \
--network=default \
--project=${PROJECT_ID} --quiet || true
echo "=> Deleting Allocated IP Range for Managed Services..."
gcloud compute addresses delete psa-range \
--global \
--project=${PROJECT_ID} --quiet || true
Delete local file
Delete the local JSON file created in the Work with QueryData in AlloyDB Studio step.
